Prestigious Victorian Engineering Excellence award for Westinghouse Rail Systems Australia
The Westinghouse Rail Systems team’s critical contribution to the successful outcome of the Middleborough Road Rail Separation Project was recognised at the prestigious Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards 2007 in Westinghouse Rail Systems () Limited (WRSA), part of Invensys plc, worked with the alliance partners VicRoads, John Holland, Connex and the Victoria Department of Infrastructure. The Middleborough Road Phil Ellingworth, Managing Director, WRSA spoke afterwards, clearly delighted with his team’s efforts. "The judges felt that this project delivered an outstanding outcome in terms of a complete rail result in a very short shutdown period, with minimal disruption to commuters and the local community. This project is an excellent example of what is possible within exceedingly tight time constraints. The alliance parties recognised that WRSA have been an integral part of an outstanding cross functional delivery team."
The complex Middleborough Road Rail Separation project – the elimination of a level crossing in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne - included lowering a railway line by up to six metres from Miller Street to east of Laburnum Street bridge so as to pass under the busy Middleborough Road.
Preparatory works started in October 2006 with a series of weekend occupations leading up to an ambitious six week closure program. The timing of the off peak, holiday period closure in January 2007 was chosen as it minimised the length of disruption to the transport network and the community, particularly the adjacent
The Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards celebrate engineering and technological brilliance by recognising leading-edge engineering projects of importance to the Victorian community. Engineers , Victoria Division State Chairman, Geoff Robinson said, “The Awards recognise those who set new standards in the engineering profession and those who marshal science to develop new services. It is part of a larger scale campaign which seeks to enhance the awareness across the community of the crucial role engineers play in enhancing our lives in remarkable ways.”
Finalists of the Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards 2007 are eligible to enter the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) 2007 which showcases the finest achievements that Australian engineering has to offer.
